York County, PA Traffic Unit Types

Fire police in the county utilize Traffic Units to assist with traffic flow and crow control on roadways. These vehicles are a type of apparatus that often utilize an arrow board to further assist with traffic control, especially on highways. In York County, PA, we have three different types of traffic apparatus we certify based on various uses and equipment standards. They are broken down below.

  1. Type 1
    • Capable of responding to emergencies on any roadway in York County from high-speedways to backend rural roads, these units are appropriately outfitted with proper emergency lights, sirens, arrow boards, and communication equipment.
  2. Type 2
    • These units are equipped with all the necessary equipment to handle traffic incidents across York County from automobile accidents, working fires, and more. However, these units carry less equipment and often require additional traffic units for larger incidents for example multiple vehicle accidents on highways.
  3. Type 3
    • This unit is a certified equipment trailer that must be hauled to emergencies to help deploy its various traffic control devices on prolonged scenes and emergency incidents typically lasting longer than 2 hours.

What it Takes to Become A Certified Traffic Unit in York County

Type 3 Equipment Requirements

  • This unit must be a trailer that can be hauled
  • Your department must include personnel training on towing a trailer and using the below equipment
  • 6 signs with a stand reading “Detour Ahead” (6-20 each)
  • 20 signs with hardware to detour traffic, omnidirectional arrow design
  • 4 signs with a stand reading “Emergency Scene Ahead” (4-20 each)
  • 4 signs with a stand reading “Road Closed Ahead” (4-10 each)
  • 4 signs with a stand reading “Road Closed” (4-10 each), 48” wide x 30” tall
  • 6 Barricades that are collapsible, minimum 24” wide (6-36 each)
  • 60 Traffic cones, 28-inches tall, two reflective stripes (60-144 each)

Type 2 Equipment Requirements

  • Red warning lights & siren (red is required; other allowable color combinations acceptable)
  • VMS/DMS/PCMS or Arrow Board, minimum size 30” x 60” (Variable Message Sign, Dynamic Message Sign, or Portable Changeable Message Sign)
  • Reflective graphics and lettering marking to easily identify the vehicle
  • Radio, 2-way (home County frequencies) (one for each occupant)
  • Binoculars
  • HazMat Guidebook (or on-board computer with HazMat App)
  • Cellular telephone (personal cell phone is permitted)
  • 2 Vests, jackets, or coats, ANSI Level III (2 total)
  • Helmets (Fire Helmets or Police motorcycle style) (one for each occupant)
  • Fire Extinguisher, Dry Chemical (ABC), 10 lb minimum
  • First Aid Kit with pocket mask
  • Flashlights, (2) Rechargeable, w/chargers and wands, or, (2) Flashlight w/wands and 2 sets spare batteries each
  • Portable Floodlights to illuminate Fire Police and/or Traffic Control Points (2 each, with portable power source)
  • Road Flares (2 cases) or electronic equivalent
  • 4 signs with a stand reading “Emergency Scene Ahead”
  • 2 signs with a stand reading “Lane Closed Ahead”
  • 4 signs with a stand reading “Road Closed Ahead”
  • 4 signs with a stand reading “Road Closed” at 48” x 30”
  • 30 traffic cones, 28-inches tall, two reflective stripes (30 - 48 each)
  • Spare batteries for electronic devices

Type 1 Equipment Requirements

  • VMS (Variable Message Sign) or Arrow Board, minimum size 30” x 60”
  • Reflective graphics and lettering marking to easily identify the vehicle
  • Radio, 2-way (home County frequencies) (one for each occupant)
  • 1 Binoculars
  • 1 HazMat Guidebook (or on-board computer with HazMat App)
  • 1 Cellular telephone (personal cell phone is permitted)
  • 2 Vests, jackets, or coats, ANSI Level III
  • 1 Helmet (Fire Helmet or Police motorcycle style) (one for each occupant)
  • 1 Fire Extinguisher, Dry Chemical (ABC), 10 lb minimum
  • 1 First Aid Kit with pocket mask
  • 2 Flashlights, rechargeable, w/chargers and wands, or flashlight w/wands and 2 sets spare batteries each
  • 2 Portable Floodlights to illuminate Fire Policemen at TCP (Traffic Control Points) (2 each, with portable power source)
  • 2 Cases of Road Flares or electronic equivalent
  • 1 Incident Command Board (whiteboard with a stand/mounting, eraser and markers) (Optional)
  • 1 Maps, GPS device or electronic equivalent
  • 20 Signs with hardware to aid in setting up a Detour, omnidirectional arrow design (20 each)
  • 4 signs with a stand reading “Emergency Scene Ahead”
  • 2 signs with a stand reading “Flagger Ahead” (pictorial)
  • 2 signs with a stand reading “Lane Closed Ahead”
  • 2 signs with a stand reading “Road Closed Ahead”
  • 2 signs with a stand reading “Road Closed” at 48” wide x 30” tall
  • 2 Stop/Slow paddles with 6’ poles, reflective (Optional)
  • 6 Collapsible barricades, minimum 24” wide
  • 48 traffic cones, 28-inches tall, two reflective stripes (48 - 60 each)
  • Yellow barrier tape (Fire Line - Do Not Cross; Caution, etc.) (2 rolls minimum)
  • Spare batteries for electronic devices
